Robert Bernon Mumford was born on June 10, 1841 in Franklin, New 
London, Connecticut. He was the second youngest of six children 
born to James H. Mumford and Clarissa Kenyon, natives of Rhode 
Island. James, the son of Nathaniel Mumford of English descent, 
was a farmer and cattle rancher; he died in 1869 in Connecticut. 
Clarissa, the daughter of Greene Kenyon of Irish descent, was 
born in 1801 and died in 1878.

Robert B. Mumford clerked in Norwich, CT until 1862 when he 
enlisted in the Union Army of the Civil War. He fought with 
Company B of the Connecticut 26th Infantry Regiment. He served 12 
months and participated in many hard engagements and was under 
fire for 42 days at Port Hudson, Louisiana. After the war, Robert 
returned home and bought 200 acres of land, 3 miles from Norwich, 
CT.

On November 29, 1866, Robert Mumford married Helen Maria 
Phillips, the daughter of George Washington Phillips and Mary 
Crary Meech. Their first two sons, Arthur Ashbel and Hamilton 
Meech were born in Connecticut. After two years in Duluth, 
Minnesota, the Mumford family moved to Rochester, where Robert 
bought and sold cattle. This was where their third son, Hale 
Helme, was born in 1872. The  remaining children, Leonard 
James, Maurice Clarence, and Mary Annie, were all born in 
Glyndon, Clay County, MN where Robert Mumford was granted a 
homestead. Their only daughter, Mary Annie, died in infancy.

Robert Bernon Mumford died on March 26, 1889 and was buried in 
the family burial plot of the Mumford homestead.
